About the Benevolent
Society of Blues

Who are we?
Who are we?

Blues supporting Blues…

Blues supporting Blues…

Entirely independent of Christ’s Hospital, the Benevolent Society of Blues (BSB) is a registered charity set up by Old Blues to help Old Blues and their dependents in need.

The BSB is a registered charity that was founded in 1824 and provides benefits for those educated or employed at Christ’s Hospital, their parents, spouses, widows, widowers, children and dependents who are in need, hardship or distress.

In essence the BSB is all about ‘Blues Supporting Blues’ and is a great way to help answer The Charge that all Old Blues are given at their Leaving Service.

What we do

What we do

The BSB is a registered charity that was founded in 1824 and provides benefits for those educated or employed at Christ’s Hospital, their parents, spouses, widows, widowers, children and dependents who are in need, hardship or distress.

In practice this help is given by making regular payments, by making grants or by providing interest-free loans which beneficiaries are asked to repay when their circumstances permit.

We can also provide information about many circumstances and give pointers to places where further financial assistance, advice and guidance can be obtained.

If you know someone in need of help, contact us confidentially today.

How we work

Our work is divided amongst four committees:

Grants & Loans

This committee is made up of a diverse group of Old Blues who are responsible for assessing the completed applications and enquiries that come through the BSB Office. The committee is the one responsible for the distribution of the Society’s income having regard to both the immediate requirements of those seeking assistance and the obligations of the Society.

Finance

This committee is responsible for the overall financial management of the Society and its assets. It formulates short and long-term financial strategies, prepares and monitors budgets and submits Annual Accounts to the Board.

Presentations

In a normal year, the BSB presents several pupils for education at Christ’s Hospital. The committee is responsible for considering these applications. The committee meets with prospective parents or other individuals responsible for the children and makes recommendations to the BSB board. Since its inception the BSB has presented over 100 pupils to Christ’s Hospital and at this moment has 17 presentees at the school.

Communications

Raising awareness of the Society is a key area for the BSB and lies at the heart of the work of the Communications Committee. Those involved are responsible for identifying and encouraging both prospective members and beneficiaries through marketing, fundraising and public-relations initiative and ensuring that the society has an engaging and up to date online profile.

‘THE CHARGE’
I Charge you never to forget the great benefits you have received in this place, and in time to come according to your means to do all that you can do to enable others to enjoy the same advantage; and remember that you carry with you, wherever you go, the good name of Christ’s Hospital. May God Almighty bless you in your ways and keep you in the knowledge of his love now and forever.
